Sri Annapurna Ashtakam is written by Adi Shankaracharya to praise and invoke the grace of Mother Goddess Annapurneswari. Mother Goddess Annapurneswari is the presiding deity at Banaras or Varanasi. She is the Mother who graces food to everybody ; especially for poor and destitute. The Godess of Varanasi also fed King Harishchandra’s children (he became poor due to Rishi Vashishta).

Annapoorna Ashtakam with Meaning ;
Annapoorna Ashtakam are prayer gems addressed to Goddess Annapurneswari/Annapurna .
Annapurna is the Hindu goddess of food and cooking. She is the goddess who holds in one hand a jeweled vessel containing food and in the other a golden spoon to distribute the food among her devotees. She has the power to distribute food to an unlimited amount of people. Annapurna literally means “one who is full of food.”
Annapurna is an incarnation of Parvati. She is often seen giving food to her husband, Shiva. Shiva is seen begging with a skull begging bowl as Annapurna doles out food to her lover. In south India you often find images of Annapurna anywhere people eat.
